I suspect its a symptom of the huge power law dynamics of the global audience for and digital (zero marginal cost) distribution of media. Two main factors:

1. Past success means more current popularity, which means a bigger potential audience

2. When extending existing IP, the risk-reward balance is skewed towards lower risk. If you're spending big to get a big return, you should stick with what you know people will like.
