from my perspective, insofar as there was a promise, it was always "this is a collective, *you* have to step up and make it happen for anything to happen"

I don't get why you think this is nefarious — an orchestrated scheme — versus just that the basic idea (decentralized headless brand) has not led to explosive growth. a hypothesis can simply not pan out (at least in the near-term), no?
