In Japan, when a dish breaks, they don't throw it away, but based on an ancient belief and art they inherited from their ancestors, they repair the breaks in a special way.  They glue the broken pieces together with gold powder.  This traditional Japanese art is called golden binding or kintsugi.

The reason for using sugi or kintsugi to repair broken dishes in Japan is related to cultural reasons, aesthetics and maintaining social value. This art is appreciated in Japanese culture as a symbol of tolerance, beauty and solidarity against time and decay.
