3/ Make your inbox discoverable by linking identities like Ethereum and Solana wallets, Bluesky DIDs, Farcaster FIDs, or Basenames. Identity links are recorded on XMTP's L3 appchain for cryptographic verifiability.

1/ XMTP's V3 update this week laid the foundation for truly chain-agnostic, peer-to-peer messaging. Here's what this could look like in action, courtesy of v0 and Tailwind. Demo: https://v0-xmtp-v3-wireframes.vercel.app/ Walkthrough:👇

An app could totally build this. Separate XMTP inboxes for identities that need to be kept separate, merged into one inbox in the UI layer.

Your old V2 ETH address becomes just one linked identity in V3. Your inbox is now portable, extensible, and future-proof — no longer stuck to one chain or key. Bring your own identities and switch them anytime.

In V3, your inbox has a new unique identifier: inboxId. ✅ Controlled by passkeys or wallets ✅ Links multiple identities (ETH, Solana, more) ✅ Resolves names from any linked identity

XMTP V3 changes how identity works for messaging. In V2, your inbox was your wallet — tightly bound to a single ETH address. Yesterday's V3 update decoupled that. Here's what changed 👇

Passkey inboxes make it so that, in theory, any ownable identity can use XMTP. All it needs is keys to sign with. Which kind of identity should XMTP support next?

Yes—we validate passkeys using WebAuthn, with each passkey tied to a specific origin domain

5. XMTP publishes the message onchain for anyone to verify the link. You can also use XMTP with only a passkey. Or multiple passkeys, so you can access the same inbox from any app/device.

3. You log into your inbox app with your XMTP ID and another identity you own (e.g. Solana wallet) 4. Both identities sign a message to prove ownership and agreement
