I could not be more excited about XIP-55: https://community.xmtp.org/t/xip-55-passkey-identity/874 Passkey accounts and wallet accounts, all on the same network. It's instant access to decentralized messaging for anyone with an Apple or Android device.

Decentralized social and messaging will let agents roam free. A limitless frontier for economic opportunity and a crucible for AI safety.

Said differently: Imagine you could build agents on top of iMessage + Apply Pay, what agents would you want to add to your messages?

Funny how open decentralized networks provide better privacy than 'secure' walled gardens - there's no single entity that can be legally compelled to compromise the system. https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2025/02/07/apple-encryption-backdoor-uk/

For 3 years, we've been obsessed with one thought: What if messaging belonged to all? Today's testnet launch is a giant leap towards that future - where privacy is the default, spam is dead on arrival, and you can truly own your identity and communications.

There wasnā€™t really a viable path for this without group chat in the protocol. The new version of XMTP includes groups, which just shipped in Converse.

@hardymathieu.eth Coming soon to Converse too. The app will be able to deliver a much more seamless experience with a smart wallet at its core.

Because XMTP groups are end-to-end encrypted and authenticated using MLS, the best way to interface with the network is to use one of the platform-specific client libraries. Hereā€™s React Native: https://github.com/xmtp/xmtp-react-native/tree/beta You can use gRPC if you only need basic publish/subscribe/query operations: https://github.com/xmtp/xmtp-node-js-tools

You can build a group chat protocol in a day or two. Not that hard. Building one that respects user privacy is a different story. Congrats to the team on shipping a version of group chat in line with our core values around privacy and security. Getting all those checkboxes on the same chart is no small feat.

The massive effort behind this milestone provides a durable foundation for decentralizing the network and - crucially - allows inbox app developers to immediately start innovating with secure, onchain group chat. Start building: https://xmtp.org/docs/build/group-chat

MLS equips XMTP with forward secrecy and post-compromise security in a modern, scalable way. Using default-anonymous blockchain identities instead of phone numbers, XMTP reveals less identifying metadata than other private messaging services with these security properties.

Incredibly proud of @xmtp's trailblazing production implementation of Messaging Layer Security, ratified last year by the IETF as the new internet standard for secure, private messaging.
