/ Late night ramblings on “Why Nook”. @emo.eth and I have had a ton of ideas we’ve wanted to explore, many of which we’ve been talking about since our time at OpenSea. Most of these are social in nature and we needed some place to experiment and iterate quickly. aka /nook

/ Nook has been built with modularity in mind. Almost every piece of the app is customizable, and this allows us to build new experiences on top of our platform quickly. Nook looks very much like Discord, but I like to think of nooks as apps. An app that you can build for your community without knowing how to code.

/ If a nook is an app, then the shelves in a nook are like screens in an app. We started with Farcaster shelves because FC is our social layer. We needed to be at parity with Warpcast on major features. We’re actively working on bringing non-FC shelves that will hopefully help show the true power of Nook.

/ Nook is meant to be a playground, for us and for you. Now that the platform is stable, we’re going to start building out new ways to engage with crypto, both existing products and new experiences we come up with. These will be made available through shelves for your nook, and potentially new nook templates.

/ The secondary goal is to make a stab at true client diversity for Farcaster. I’m generally bearish on FC long term if there isn’t another client with a material amount of users. Warpcast dominance is one of the main arguments against FC for good reason. FC will be more successful with healthy competition.

/ Lastly, a lot of people are surprised that @emo.eth and I are building a consumer app. For anyone that knows us, both of our expertise lies more on the side of crypto protocols and infra. We’ve never built a mobile app before and just started learning React Native < 2 months ago.

/ We think there’s a huge opportunity to bridging the gap between protocol builders and consumers. We’re deeply knowledgeable about many of the cool technical things happening in the space and want to work with these teams to build novel experiences. Again, this is why Nook has been built the way that it has.

/ Hopefully that helps clarify how we’re thinking about Nook. We’re going to continue experimenting and iterating quickly. Let us know what’s working and what isn’t. And let me know if you want an invite to follow along 🫡
