The island of Elba has a long history and was previously inhabited by the Ligurian Illuvians, Greeks, Etruscans and Romans. However, the most famous inhabitant of Elba was Napoleon, who was exiled to Elba in 1814. Napoleon's winter and summer homes still stand and are open to the public for visits.
