Socket Programming Usage A UNIX socket is used in a client-server application framework. A server is a process that performs some function based on a request from a client. Most application-level protocols such as FTP, SMTP, and POP3 use sockets to establish communication between a client and a server and then to exchange information. Processes using sockets can reside on the same system or on different systems on different networks. Sockets are useful for stand-alone and networked applications. Sockets allow you to exchange information between processes on the same machine or on a network, distribute work to the most efficient machine, and easily allow access to centralized data. The Socket Application Programming Interface (API) is the networking standard for TCP/IP. A wide range of operating systems support socket APIs. IBM sockets support several transports and network protocols. Socket system functions and socket network functions are thread-oriented.
