it’s obvious that using my phone is directly correlated to regretted life minutes. i really need to think about this more seriously.

I really had an issue with it, for me i had to: - delete ig/twitter/youtube from phone (keep youtube music) - deactivate ig for a bit so people got in the habit of messaging me elsewhere - remove all apps from home screen except essentials - phone display on grayscale - not have phone in my bedroom, go random times without it (apple watch for emergencies) - Chrome extensions (news feed eradicator and unhook) to minimise time spent on ig/twitter/youtube on desktop... still do use them, but a lot less than before. haven't looked at other extensions, kinda curious. still procrastinate in other ways now (and still working on it) but for me i feel news/blogs/random surfing is less addictive than ig / twitter on phone

good list – i've done many of these. The truth is I was having great success until I started building on farcaster. Now support, fun, work, and play is all intermixed. I have a legitimate reason to monitor warpcast, i deal with them but then get sucked into other activities. its not all regretted life minutes, i love the people i've met here and having fun but it definitely impacts my physche, ability to focus and do hard things that require deep work. a lot of those things i admire.

There seems to be a deeper question hidden here. you build on farcaster -> you spend more time on it -> it harms you. vs you build on farcaster -> others spend more time on it thanks to your work -> it harms others? This isn't a critique... it's an invitation to reflect on what we do, the ultimate values we create.

I’ve been thinking about that. An uncharitable analogy is “addict vs drug dealer”. But it’s not reasonable to generalize. Many people have no issue with self moderation. Some believe there’s no issue with time spent on social media and get far more benefit from it than alternatives. Even for me it’s not cut and dry. I’m just a bit overindexed trying to bootstrap a business and now getting some balance back.

That makes a lot of sense! To add to your analogy, maybe Farcaster is more like sugar or wine -- very enjoyable in moderation. For me, thinking about the overall effects of my work had a big impact on my career. Sites like 80000hours.org were very influential.
