3,000 domesticated deer live in the city of Nara. I think I fed and met a few hundred of the herd today. Nara is the ancient capital of Japan before Kyoto and the deer have been a part of Nara as long as its written history goes. A god in the form of a great white stag brought the deer to the city and promised that as long as the people took care of the deer, he would protect the city from natural disaster. The capital was moved because of deforestation not natural disasters. Every temple that survived wars has been untouched by natural disasters, only human ones. There are special crackers called βsenbeiβ that you are allowed to feed the deer. They bow politely as ask for crackers. Itβs adorable.
