Growing up in foster care, Shaheed rarely experienced parental love or tenderness. Now, as he became a father for the first time, he is discovering emotions previously unknown to him—profound, unconditional love for his daughter and an instinctive desire to shield her from life's dangers. 

As he describes it, “I found within me a tenderness that I never knew was there or even possible."
