ENS and SOL domains are fun but I never really thought they had any great utility. 

Easier to remember, but it’s not like you pay Verizon💰each year to keep contacts in your phone or even remember each contact name correctly.

What am I missing?

'Send money to John'. OK, the John in your addr book is likely different than the John in mine.

'Send money to silentjohn.eth.' OK, now everybody in the whole world knows who we're talking about, and can verify it.

Of course you can. Nobody else has your address book though. Even if you wanted to share your address book globally, it wouldn't be decentralized. Maybe you decide that my name shouldn't be silentjohn.eth but rather annoyingdude.eth.
