when my 4yo son grows up it'll be amusing to him that we all used computers that couldn't understand us, and that we could either click buttons or learn to write instructions in special computer languages, which was a lucrative profession.

I keep seeing smug takes about crypto not having "real" use cases or adoption. But that's like saying voting machines have no use case in the Soviet Union. It's not an incremental evolution, it's a complete system reset. And it will have a use case when people will it. https://x.com/SMTuffy/status/1730724053135024226

It’s kinda weird how they always manage to take a polarizing figure and turn them into an underdog hero in the eyes of people who were otherwise ambivalent.

I feel more stingy about tipping a delivery driver than a waiter. One walks over and the other drives over. For deliveries it feels like I'm already paying so much extra but even a waiter gets paid by the hour anyway. Idk, I guess food delivery prices feel like a ripoff?

That's a good point. I was more coming from the space colonization angle: https://warpcast.com/sidravi/0x0d757f72

Yup, I meant builders in the broadest sense possible. They're still a minority. The set of all english language netflix watchers would be, in my estimation, about 10-20x bigger in size than the builders.

If we can define product and success in any way we see fit, I'd say muzero is the last successful one. It was a "product" produced to compete in specific benchmarks and competitions, like go and protein folding and it's been phenomenal.

you're talking about the political class and adjacent. but the sentiment is not limited to them. the average urban netflix watcher (proxy for median elite) is not pro modi.

yeah, but builders are not the median elite. they're a minority. you and i may belong in that bubble, but the average english educated netflix watcher in urban india is much more influenced by western narratives.

the "median elite", which is predominantly urban english educated upwardly mobile youth, have a visceral distaste for modi and bjp's politics. we're talking broad strokes, of course.

I realized what bothers me about @vitalik.eth d/acc essay. Even though it is optimistic, it shares with the pessimist side a presumption that technology, as an evolutionary process, *can* be governed according to some notion of human intent. “Tech can/cannot be governed” is a bigger divide than optimism/pessimism

i suspect the answer is something like "being bullish on india, not being viscerally anti modi"

is space colonization the killer app for network states? it's obviously hard and problematic to break the century of peace on earth by starting a new era of territorial expansion. but space colonies need a legal framework for transacting.

why have you framed the aspiration for network states as one culminating in territorial sovereignty in a westphalian sense? i would think the big unlock that NS bring is the blurring of the boundaries and formalisms of the westphalian system of statehood.
