Why do you think Apple hasn’t figured out gaming?

Historically most of their products were targeting professionals in different areas (developers, designers, etc), and in terms of entertainment Apple always were accenting music over other things. There were no big gaming people inside the company too, so the segment never was properly developed and marketed.

Apple Pippin (1995), is a video game console designed by Apple (yes, that wsa a thing) and manufactured by Japanese toy corporation Bandai. It was build on Macintosh PowerPC architecture. It was running Pippin OS (modified Apple's System 7). 

A list of games and software (including web-browsers) were released for the console in Japan, but Pippin's lifespan was only 2 years and only 42k units were sold.
