Why do you think Apple hasn’t figured out gaming?

Because they aren’t gamers natively so they don’t build for them

They want complete control, they could easily "figure it out" by not forcing metal on everyone and add Vulcan support. They'd rather force people to port their games over and put them on the Mac App Store than flip a switch and let 90% of the games people have already bought on steam be playable

priorities i think. also compatibility. their “ecosystem” aspect kinda hinders games from being open to adopting them. also the epic games issue. they are making incremental updates but i dont see them doing anything substantial in gaming any time soon. (unless their Vision Pro play fails and they pivot to something more tangible ie, gaming experiences?)

It’s a really good question. Apple productions came from nowhere with a red hot focus and did awesome content like Ted Lasso. And games are way bigger than the movie industry now.

i read that Steve Jobs didn't like gaming personally and not only did this mean they basically locked themselves out of the early and ongoing network effects, the company has so much of his instilled values that i imagine much of the culture still has it deprioritized

You mean at the level of Console Gaming or in general? Cause they’ve been having some pretty big advances recently with all the stuff they’ve been doing for Mobile Gaming and now with the power of the latest chips on both Mac and Mobile being able to run some pretty sweet graphics, like the new Assassin’s Creed and so on.

Microsoft tried brute force with infinite money and Sony is clearly winning in numbers and quality. So it seems a very challenging area.

Historically most of their products were targeting professionals in different areas (developers, designers, etc), and in terms of entertainment Apple always were accenting music over other things. There were no big gaming people inside the company too, so the segment never was properly developed and marketed.

Also Apple is moving towards building everything in-house, games are simply too complex for such an approach. Conversely, AppleTV has a lower market share among streaming services, but its ratio of spending money to subscribers is much better. What is your take?

why did they feel the need to create Apple Studios for film production? does a similar problem exist for games?
