Live the same

It all started when I came to my friends’ place and was waiting for them to get ready. Someone knocked on the door and I thought it was one of our mutual friends, so I opened it. But instead, there was a guy I didn’t know, smiling and saying something in Spanish.

He was holding a bottle of rum, some cola. He just walked in, still chatting, put it all on the table and started pouring Cuba Libres – 9 to 1 rum to cola ratio, haha.

It turned out he was my friends’ neighbor and had come to have a drink with the neighbors for Christmas. None of us even knew his name 😄

After drinking basically a full mug of rum, we barely had time to say goodbye to the guy and finally headed out – first to a bar and then to walk along the beach.

Bavaro didn’t have any special places to relax back then – no plazas or anything like that – so everyone just headed to the beach. Maybe something has changed now, I haven't been there for a long time :)

We took the scooters and went to the bar, parked them, met up with a few more friends, had some more drinks... all in all, the evening went pretty well. Then we went for a walk along the beach. Most people were hanging out near the big fancy hotels, but we went the other way, where it was quieter. There is one place on the coast that was not bought by any hotels - there was our favorite bar (the one that was washed away by the ocean during a hurricane 3 years later) and a pier that we were heading to.

This is also where they pull the boats out of the water in the evening and leave them under guard on the beach. I knew this place well, because I always took a shortcut through this "boat parking lot". The guards did not like it, but everyone just acted like they did not understand what the guards were telling them and walked on. I've done this dozens of times and never had any problems - I didn't even know they were there...

So we walked past, not expecting any problems - but then the problems happened...
