Second hurricane. We were hoping it would pass us by like the last one, so we decided not to leave. But this time, we weren’t so lucky. The eye of the storm was expected to hit Bavaro around midnight. Before the hurricane itself, everything was calm, as usual, but by evening the wind had picked up significantly. my friends and I decided to go out to the beach. Walking with the wind was fun, but coming back was tough.

The wind was so strong that it took us about 30 min to walk just 500m. We had to take off our shoes, put them on our hands, and shield our faces because the wind was whipping up sand that scratched our skin! The apartment I was renting was in a great spot—on the ocean side, but protected on two sides by a tall hotel building that acted like a wall for our residence. A large reef surrounding most of the island made it nearly impossible for big waves to form... though it didn’t save our favorite beach bar, which was completely washed away. It just vanished, along with the hotel’s beach bar

The night was something else. In the Dominican Republic, it gets dark pretty early, but this night was as dark as it gets. You could only see anything out the window when lightning lit up the sky. You could hear things breaking, rattling, and creaking in the wind, but it was hard to tell what exactly it was.

I had barricaded the windows with some neighbors using furniture, and we were sitting around with flashlights, sipping rum, and playing cards. Like I mentioned, the house I was staying in was in a great spot—protected by a large hotel building on several sides—so our little residence didn’t suffer any damage. Well, except for a palm tree that got blown over and crashed onto the roof during the night. The sound of that happening was especially freaky in the pitch darkness.

Overall, nothing too scary happened in Bavaro, although we didn’t have electricity or water for two days. Ended up using wet wipes to stay clean during that time. 😅
