Live the same

After sitting around for a few hours, we finally got the results back and found out a few things right away:

We didn't have to rush at all because the hospital had a lot of blood.
Steve had a completely different blood type.
I didn't have malaria! 😂
I couldn't give blood anyway because I had drunk the night before (how was I supposed to know I was giving blood the next day?).
The doctor asked me why I thought I had malaria. I told her I had been treated for it in Bavaro. She just rolled her eyes and said, "The doctors there are idiots. You either had dengue or chikungunya."

Later, some friends in the medical field told me that if I really wanted to know if I had malaria, I should get tested at a private clinic because doctors in the Dominican Republic often misdiagnose. But I never got to that point, so it was some kind of fever... but what kind exactly, who cares? 😆

So, this is a story about a guy who "needs" blood. I found out what happened to him only a few days later.

He moved to the Dominican Republic a long time ago from a big city and started working as a tour guide on the Samana Peninsula - an amazing place, but if you are used to city life, life there can be pretty boring.

He ended up marrying a Dominican woman - the one who was laughing with her friend in the hospital hallway.. while this guy was on dialysis, his kidneys and liver failed. And why did this happen? Boredom. He started drinking and taking drugs, and in just five years, his organs completely failed.

There was no way to save him - he needed both a liver and a kidney transplant. That didn't happen. That's what a lack of self-control can do.

At first, I was shocked by his wife's reaction. But then I found out... that he had life insurance. And suddenly everything became clear.

A sad story. 
And we still had to figure out how to get back home.
