genuine question: how did U2 become like the biggest band in the world (iTunes releases, Sphere residency, etc) when i (and a lot of people i ask) can’t really name more than two songs? disclaimer: with or without you is a good song

being overtly political/activist and aligned with the zeitgeist at the time helped a lot, remember all the pics of bono hanging out with bill clinton etc? thom yorke wasn't getting that kind of pump also arguably the sound was much more tuned for mainstream (rather than experimental or counterculture)
