I view this as a subtle extrapolation of the freemium software model. 

Like YouTube, you can use it for free,   But they will also show you ads and try to sell you stuff. 
Or you can pay and use the product with (less) manipulation.

AI models will be more or less aligned with your interests based on pricing tiers.

This is the worst consumerist propaganda of our generation, implying that if we're not spending money then we should reconsider.

Here's a fun fact: If we're paying, we're even more the product. We're a *qualified lead* now, the business knows they can extract money from us and they're just getting started.

A profit-driven company is not going to leave money on the table because "lol well they're already paying I guess, so we're not going to extract more from them." Come on.

There's many of us who make "free" products, like open source software or even subsidized SaaS offerings. This deserves some amount of gratitude instead of self-defeating suspicion. 

I'm all for discussing threat models like data being used for AI training or being sold or whatever, but please stop repeating this shameful trope.
