I was confused about why, despite the fact that I pay for YouTube premium and would never click an ad, they are clearly still farming my attention. Shouldn’t our incentives be aligned? Nope, they can always still extract more training data from me, and use that to get money from someone else.

No reason that a for-profit company would leave money on the table. Paying for a product doesn't mean the company won't want to extract even more (if anything, you're a qualified lead now, more likely to be targeted). This is also why the premise that Apple doesn't need to sell ads is not compelling, it's just not a priority yet.

Well put. If there is a difference it’s that Apple has some competition for devices/OS, whereas YouTube has a monopoly over “informative community generated videos”.
