I feel like a little bit of an outsider in all the worlds I move through. This is certainly beneficial in some ways, but it can also be taxing to rarely feel fully at ease.

This is one possible interpretation: https://xkcd.com/610/ Which is not much more than an introvert’s cope for being awkward.

Another is a certain natural skepticism/contrarianism/paranoia. I think that there is likely a healthy and unhealthy way for this tendency to express itself. But I’m not quite sure what the healthy one is. I’m thinking “friendly combative”?

Or, how to do you the “yes… and” improv technique without being too agreeable?

I relate to what you describe. For me, I think a big part of it is being uncomfortable with commitment. In highschool, I never felt comfortable being locked into a single social group, I'd always roam between many. I recently noticed I still do that today, which is hard because I miss out on a lot vs people who go "all in". It's easy to rationalize it, too. Diversifying! Avoiding bubbles! Contrarianism! But I don't know, honestly not sure if I like it or dislike this about myself, but I do have envy of people who appear to be fully "at home" with their one group and fully identify with them.

Maybe *exclusivity* rather than commitment? I don't even know.

This is really well articulated, and yes, there is a sense in which it feels like more of a defensive stance than a reasoned principle. More reactionary than contrarian perhaps.
