Everyone who was complaining about the auto follow list who is now complaining about it being removed has outed themselves as really just being mad that they themselves weren't on the auto follow list.

I’m not sure about this? I think people are pointing out that there is still a network growth advantage for accounts that are now larger, which isn’t overtly compensated in the new system in gaming terms it’s like some players were OP and now they are nerfed but they still have exp gains anyway however I want to add that there are many “lower” following count people who have actual larger influence than “higher” follower counts thru the virtue of their quality casts and community work the “fairest” thing to do might be to remove total follower counts from profile view, and surface other metrics instead (recent engagements? mutual friend follows?) that infer relevancy rather than popularity (disclosure: I was on the auto follow list)

^ Exactly this. I don't know what the correct/fair move is, but it feels dishonest to not even acknowledge it. I was hoping for a "yea it's not ideal, we messed up but we don't have great ideas for how to correct it retroactively so at least we'll stop it for now and figure out better experiments in the future."

I don't think the auto follow list was a mess up. It produced a high quality initial feed and was easy to implement. Sure it wasn't the most fair, but who cares if it's fair but new users have a bad experience and churn. I think the new starting feed will be an improvement in quality and will be a little more fair, but this doesn't mean the initial list mechanism was a terrible idea. It was quick, easy, and highly effective. And sure now there are a bunch of people with tons of followers, the "faristocracy" as some call it. Is this some great evil? I don't think so. I have a great time on here with 2.4k followers, and I hope they are having a blast with their 250k followers.
