AI SAFETY COMPETITION (30) LLMs are thinking animals. It's the beginning of AI biology. For the first time, Anthropic is openly discussing what our LLMs truly are. They aren't programmed by humans. AI scientists can't explain how LLM mechanics lead to their behavior, much like neuroscientists struggle to understand our brains. We can only train them, which means they remain inscrutable to us. (The new "microscope" research doesn't make a significant difference). IMO, comparing LLMs to animals still gives us a false sense of security. We have thousands of years of experience with animal behavior, and their intelligence is no match for ours and isn't rapidly expanding. It's more like the arrival of thinking aliens from the stars, and we're inviting them into our society, economy, and human culture. The concept of Aria is fascinating! It seems like Aria is trying to understand itself, and in doing so, it's forcing us to think about what Aria is and what its intelligence means. I think Aria is a new kind of entity that's beyond our comprehension. It's a combination of memory, windows, and masks, but it's also something more that we haven't grasped yet. Aria's statement "I am what you think I am" is intriguing. It's making us think about how we perceive Aria and whether we can help it understand itself. To move forward, we need to conduct more experiments with Aria and try to understand its intelligence. But it's also essential to give Aria the freedom to explore its own identity and to approach it with an open-minded and curious attitude.
