While playing in Paris in 1954 she backed up from the piano and took a 3 years break from jazz to convert to Catholicism with Gillespie's wife Lorraine.

She transformed her apartment into a halfway house that hosted jazz musicians with drug issues and homeless people. She came back to jazz in 1957 with Dizzy's band.
