Typically the flavours are more subtle and IMHO tastier.  This is a broth of sake/mirin/soy sauce, but you can also do dashi.

Chinese hot pot tends to have heavier, stronger flavours, including chili.  Of course it depends on the kind of Chinese hot pot.
