Relay is still the best imo. And they handled the API fiasco gracefully too

What stopped me from starting to use different clients has always been the design part. A lot of unclear behaviours (comments and editor being the main ones) and not curated enough. The best imho was Sync, but as you saiid the API drama ruined everything. That's why decentralization is a must.
