just installed ubuntu server on a nuc and connected all my devices via tailscale

Usually the fun in a homelab is starting with a problem you want to solve like moving away from cloud subscriptions via NAS, more capable home networking, home automation, etc.

What’s a service your devices could benefit from having access to? Do you have any media you want to access remotely or share with friends?

- public readable media & websites
- self-organizing network file system
- little to no upkeep beyond occasional hardware replacements

If you’re into smart home stuff there’s HomeAssistant. Can be paired with local LLMs and voice recognition if you wanna fully escape Alexa/Google Assistant/Siri.

Uptime Kuma if you want monitoring.

i set it up with the intention of running some backend services on it like indexers. the process can run in my apartment but save data to a remote db so the end product isn't slower. could shave maybe $50/month off my railway bill

but open to getting nerdsniped on other things in the process lol

I would say Wireguard is the gold standard for most consumer VPNs. It’s a FOSS and modern improvement over OpenVPN.

It can be a bit of a hassle to manually configure so most people opt to use Tailscale, which is Wireguard with very light overhead atop it in exchange for very convenient installations.

Easiest setup to get full access to your home network is run a Wireguard or Tailscale server directly on your router. I stopped using my Google Wifi pucks for this very reason since they’re very limited in features, though I imagine some hardware routers have out of the box support for Wireguard or Tailscale.

If you wanna go down further a rabbit hole, you can run pfSense or OPNsense on a computer with two Ethernet ports and have that act as your main router + firewall. The OS can even be virtualized; it just needs direct access to the NICs to correctly route traffic.

Personally I have a OPNsense VM running on Unraid on my old gaming PC because I’m too paranoid of vendor lock in with Unifi hardware 🥸

Are there any recommendations for home VPN networks so I connect to my home network abroad? For totally legal and normal things, of course 😉
