I tried this approach when I first joined Google which unsurprisingly has a lot of meta discussion on inbox management. I couldn’t stick to it.

The only label I use is is:archived and I just throw everything that isn’t directly addressed to me in there. Happy as a clam now.

The automations largely take care of the labeling and sorting. I have Google Alerts set up for industry news and I do look at that folder quite a bit. I don't think you need to do this at all EVER. I am just succumbing to the paranoid idea someone would judge me about it one day because I do pride myself on being organized LMAO
