The perfect dumb phone would be a regular smart phone but with scrolling disabled.

What you see on your screen is what you get. All the utility is still there. Exploration only possible with search.

Scrolling as a behavior is just too frictionless.

Conceptually I like the idea of dumb tech, but I rarely think creating something new is the solution.

Consumer hardware is insanely hard as an industry. Even with economy of scale you're making marginal profits and resorting to occasional loss leaders for the sake of platform buy in.

So these new hardware companies, while may have good intentions, end up rubbing people the wrong way because the price tags are always so high. No one really wants to pay more to do less.

I feel like hacking software into existing hardware is the way to go. Android is way more capable here but even stock iOS has *some* hope nowadays with the Assistive Access which greatly simplifies the UI to the degree of a dumb phone, while still being an iPhone.

aah yeah I know a couple of people that have pre-ordered a light phone 3, but after watching some reviews I have my reservations..

seems like there's something to be created in between full on surveillance state smartphone and too dumb to enjoy using

Removing scroll would fundamentally rewire app design. You’d see a renaissance in prioritization and hierarchy. Every pixel would have to earn its keep
