Could use the lefties thoughts on this, particularly in his controversial point about arming yourself. I am of two minds on that one. https://youtu.be/5fh5SpJunGs?si=YMCf1irWX0Zuys8c

As a non-gun owner Canadian, whose country just did a massive gun ban, after several other gun bans over the past few years. These are my thoughts: I personally think the overall American mindset around guns is dated, unrealistic, especially against tyranny is frankly a little dumb. That being said, since there are so many guns in the US and so many people own them, there’s almost no reason not to if you live there. If i lived there, I probably would just out of principle. Regarding gun bans: Prior to the bans we’ve had, Canada was very good with licensing and regulations and we had very little gun crime. Now, with the bans, gun crime is up over 100%, and nearly 80%+ of all Canadian gun crime is with US black market guns. So as a Canadian without guns, i’d say stronger regulation and education is needed. But banning anything is not. But also the “need” to arm yourself here isn’t as great, because you aren’t worried about someone else being armed. a little non-us perspective for ya

I am! 😁 It is an interesting perspective you have, and I too am thinking of this from a Canadian perspective. But also from the perspective as someone who observes America a lot. And I think for better or worse some aspects of our politics are becoming more Americanized. Apart from the gun bans. I've always been staunchly anti-gun. But depending on how far we go down the Americanization process, I could see myself acquiring a gun.

I have doubts how far down the path of Americanization we will go. We might become more conservative and populist in the meantime & I also think it’s hard not to have any purely because of proximity and economic reliance. I like to think if Canada gets rocked by tarrifs or other economic/diplomatic threats, it’ll hurt real bad short term, however overall it’ll strengthen other trade and relations with other partners & also cut down on our over reliance on America, creating less Americanization. The whole annexation stuff is just trolling. Trump’s like a class clown, the more it gets a rise out of people the more he’ll keep doing it to push it further because he’s getting attention.
