If authorizing strikes within Russia makes it more likely for us to enter WW3... I think we have to accept that, and prepare for WW3. If we compromise and allow a sovereign state to be overthrown at the whims of an old despot, we can't consider ourselves to be sincere in our beliefs of liberty, opportunity, any of the positive beliefs we might hold close. There is a strong "war is bad" sentiment among Gen X, Millennials, and Gen Z. For most of our lives, we grew up with our countries partaking in wars of flawed reasoning at best. I think this caused a bit of whiplash when we found ourselves supporting Ukraine in a war effort, and still feeling like we were doing a good thing by doing so. The cognitive dissonance of "this war effort is good" has been too much for some to overcome. Which is a state of mind I sympathize with, but we are rapidly approaching a point where we will have to decide if those values we hold dear are worth bleeding for.

We are only free when everyone else is free. If we submit to blackmail and allow Ukrainians to be forced into serfdom, then other democracies will be ripe for the picking by other autocracies as well.

Metaphorical
@hyp
it’s actually the same propaganda the far far right used in the US ahead of WWII masquerading as a “peace” movement, but was just to keep us from entering against the nazis. war is bad when it would be fighting against their despot. otherwise, they are fine with war. then when the right is fighting a war it’ll be back to “support our troops” and you’ll be a traitor if you are anti-war.

Striking inside Russia isn't going to save Ukraine. It takes the western position from defending to aggression. There's a reason most people are against this. It's also insane to propose "we have to just accept WW3 for the right to strike inside another country".
