I imagine it has to be a tad surprising for constituents in both parties that Trump is (close to?) winning the popular vote; Republicans haven't won the popular vote since 2004 People vote for higher ideals (e.g. "preserve democracy") when they are already comfortable in the status quo Harris campaign was effectively asking for a _promotion_ (VP -> president) based on the last term and turns out majority of the population, i.e. not just the electoral college, vehemently disagrees Wonder whether Democrats would have been better off bringing on a totally new candidate who could point to errors in the Biden Harris administration instead of Harris who had to defend Biden throughout the campaign
