A few years ago, I had the privilege of meeting a remarkable woman who entrusted me with her deeply complex life story. I titled this portrait series “Life with a Clean Slate.” 

A 43-year-old Maria (name changed), is a woman courageously rebuilding her life after serving a maximum sentence for killing her abusive husband.

One of the greatest challenges for someone like Maria is breaking free from the weight of her past—the suffocating narrative and the relentless burden of judgment that follows. Yet, moving forward requires acknowledging that, no matter how painful, shameful or horrific, the past is ultimately just a story—one that has already been written.

She also had a second child shortly after and lives in a happy marriage with a very good man 🤍

feeling so many emotions right now - happiness for her and also thinking about all that a total stranger has gone through ❤️
