Chris Dixon’s vision for crypto, laid out in Read Write Own, captures why I got into crypto: free (self-owned/libre) software & open protocols. Read Write Own is widely available in stores (go buy it!), so it’s a good time to break down why Chris’ vision resonated.

If you own a bookstore, you can predict the foot traffic on your block, get to know your customers, and assume a stable sales tax, but if you’re a blogger (or any creator) these assumptions are increasingly not true.

Today “foot traffic” is determined by esoteric algorithms while customer relationships are mediated by social networks. Platforms like Apple, Youtube, and Facebook take 30% to 100% of creator profits.
