An idea I think about sometimes:

The artist and the art are not the same and should be judged as such

Too often people conflate the two

I oftentimes think it’s easier for some people to evaluate a difficult body of work along some pretty black and white lines of personal conduct than along aesthetic merits. It’s a cognitive shortcut, and it’s simpler for other folks reading the criticism to understand: “artist bad. art bad.”
