An idea I think about sometimes: The artist and the art are not the same and should be judged as such Too often people conflate the two

If Hitler or Stalin had made great art, I would still appreciate the art

I'm always at an impasse about this, I liked this band but their lead singer was a convicted pedophile, I deleted all their songs from my playlist, I can't hear them and not think about the pedophile

Do you have personal experience with this? Like your Picasso analogy. If someone you loved was driven to suicide because of someone similar to Picasso circumstances, I’m guessing it would be harder to be objective.

art is a chapter while artist is the book think artist gives context to the art created, which is often a function of their creator journey (skills, desire/purpose, mental/emotional state) at a specific point in time

Art can be uniquely experienced both ways. By separating the two and conflating the two. Neither is better than the other. But becoming a maximalist of either feels like a tragedy.

Why not? Art's just a superposition of the artist. I think you'd subconsciously move towards the creator's mindset and worldview.

I oftentimes think it’s easier for some people to evaluate a difficult body of work along some pretty black and white lines of personal conduct than along aesthetic merits. It’s a cognitive shortcut, and it’s simpler for other folks reading the criticism to understand: “artist bad. art bad.”
