Got this notification 3 times today so went to the ER. Turns out I’m the youngest patient this doc has ever seen with AFib. Wouldn’t have noticed if it weren’t for the watch

Good that you followed up, Greg. If you don’t mind sharing, I’m curious whether you were having any symptoms (palpitations, fatigue, exercise intolerance, dizziness, etc) and what the ECG and echocardiogram at the ER revealed. What was the ER provider’s initial attitude about the Apple Watch alert?

Looking back I think I felt minor fluttering but not really to the point of being concerned. And ofc easier to say that I noticed it after the fact Seeing the watch notification a few times made me realize it probs wasn’t a coincidence EKG at the hospital immediately confirmed what the watch had suggested

Thanks for the additional context, Greg. More than just idle curiosity, btw. I have a both a medical background and a dad for whom my wife and I got an Apple Watch six months ago, chiefly to track his afib. Glad you detected yours and wish you well with your follow-up on it.

My mum has so interested in this. How does the watch help ? Early warning sign before physical symptoms begin? What could it help prevent?

Afib is not a condition that is generally screened for like, say, colorectal cancer is. But as Greg found, the Apple Watch can help detect previously undiagnosed afib, particularly in the absence of symptoms. And the Apple Watch can be useful to monitor effectiveness of treatment, as in the case of my dad.
