Is there any sort of penalty journalists / publishers face for publishing false or speculative statements as facts besides public disapproval? Like a board of journalism or something like that.

If not, what keeps them from being incentivized to stretch the truth as much as they can get away with?

I think Canada and England have strong laws about this afaik but it’s hard to enforce too many edge cases etc

Makes sense. It’s a slippery slope. There needs to be a better solution
