Anti corrosive paints are used for preservation of structural steel work against acid fumes and adverse weather conditions. It protects the metal components against degradation due to moisture, salt spray, oxidation or exposure to various weather conditions and industrial chemicals. In houses, they are used for painting steel roof trusses or M.S. railings for staircases, door frames, balconies, window grills, compound gates and so on.

Gouache is a water-soluble and opaque paint so the white of the paper surface does not show through. It is a tad chalkier than traditional watercolor and absorbs light rather than reflects it. The paint is diluted with water, but possesses a strong colored pigment. This unique paint dries darker and a little of it goes a long way and takes time to dry which means it can be workable for hours or even days after application.

Satin Paint: The overall reflective nature of the paint is impacted by its finish. Flat paint is the least reflective, and gloss is the most reflective. Satin paint falls in the middle. Two bonus attributes of satin paint are its durability and its ability to be cleaned gently. Things to note with satin paint are that when choosing between oil-based and water-based paint, there are pros and cons. Oil-based paint will harden faster and generally provide better coverage on your walls. The downside is the long-lasting smell; it can take a while for the fresh paint smell to disperse. Water-based paints are more durable and will take longer to yellow. The downside is that it takes longer to get the same coverage as oil-based paint provides. Acrylic paints are simple to use and clean to handle, which makes them suitable in a wide range of fine art, decorative and craft applications. Acrylic paint can colour practically anything. It is resilient and flexible and can be applied to all kinds of surfaces. While used by artists on stretched prepared canvas, paper or board, acrylics can also be applied to wood, leather, paper-mache, fabric, cement, glass, brick, pottery – almost any non-greasy surface. Acrylics are extremely versatile. They can be used straight from the tube, brushed, poured or sprayed. They can be applied in thin layers of transparent glazes or applied in thick impasto brush strokes. Diluted with water, they can be used in washed or used as a dye-like stain on fabric or wood. They are suitable for airbrushing, marbling, fabric painting and stencilling. When blended with different mediums a wide range of surfaces and textures can be created.

Edmonia Lewis, also known as “Wildfire,” was born in 1844 in New York state to an African American father and a Native American (Ojibwe) mother. She is celebrated as one of the first Black women artists to gain international renown. Orphaned at a young age, Lewis recalled a “wandering” childhood spent “fishing and swimming… and making moccasins.” When she attended school, she was “declared to be wild–they could do nothing with me.” She later enrolled at Oberlin, one of the first U.S. colleges to accept Black students, though she experienced racism and sexism throughout her time there. In one case, she was charged with attempting to poison two friends who she had served spiced wine before they fell ill. She was attacked by unknown assailants before standing trial, where she was successfully defended by Ohio’s first Black lawyer John Mercer Langston. Eventually, Lewis dropped out of Oberlin but was posthumously awarded her degree in 2022.

The exhibition “Now You See Us: Women Artists in Britain 1520–1920” at Tate Britain in London brings together paintings by over 100 artists with a connection to the U.K., debunking the widely held assumption that there were very few significant women artists before the 20th century.

Born in Florence in 1760 to an English father and an Italian mother, Maria Cosway (née Hadfield) narrowly escaped becoming the fifth victim of her family’s murderous nursemaid, who was later imprisoned. Showing natural artistic talents from a young age, she studied under the artists Violante Cerroti and Johann Zoffany in Florence and Pompeo Batoni in Rome. Shortly after moving to London in her late teens, Cosway debuted her work at the Royal Academy of Arts in 1781 and, over the following two decades, would exhibit some 30 more paintings. She gained critical acclaim for her inventive mythological scenes like Georgiana as Cynthia from Spenser’s “Faerie Queene,” a portrait of Georgiana Cavendish, Duchess of Devonshire.
