Assemblage is the three-dimensional sibling of collage. Instead of pieces of paper, it combined numerous found objects of varying sizes and purposes. The final result of the assemblage often had nothing to do with the original functions of the elements involved. Assemblage was a popular technique among the Surrealists. Particularly, the work Object (Breakfast in Fur) by the Swiss artist Meret Oppenheim combined a porcelain tea set with gazelle fur, effectively turning both substances useless for their primary functions. This juxtaposition allowed Oppenheim to explore the concept of concealed animal impulses of humankind. The piece was also interpreted as a critique of the attributes of conventional respectable femininity, with fur and tea sets read as symbols of the highest status.
