Inspired by @vortac Ed Templeton's book, I'll share an artist from the Mission School, Chris Johanson. I gravitate towards Johanson's balance of figurative/abstraction and storytelling with an honest compassion and eye for the humanity around him. It's a prize possession because of the fun title page painting.

Thank you so much for sharing, Ryan. Big fan of Chris' work as well as the whole SF Mission crew, with the likes of McGee, Kilgallen 🥲, Campbell amm. Should do sopme dedicated features in /newmasters as for the moment I do not own any more books of any of the artists (though the Kilgallen book is one I'd really love to have in my collection). This looks like a great and beautiful book and the artwork on the title is super awesome. Is it a physical object with painted faces? 150 $degen 🫴 🖤

Thanks Tim, I would love to collect the Kilgallen book. Margaret and McGee were my gateway into the Mission school and continued to be a huge influence in both their work and practice. The piece on the cover of the Johanson book is a painted three dimensional. I love the use of salvaged materials.

My most memorable exhibition was by McGee in an old abandoned cash-advance building in the Mission. Also discovered a mini-painting he did hidden on a false wall in the Vancouver Art Gallery. Banksy installed a painting in a museum, Barry did a painting on a wall without getting caught!

A small opening cut in the wall from the gallery in to the next building where McGee installed a personal collection of historical work and paraphernalia from friends. Going from a polished white wall exhibition, through and into this little whole in the wall makes my heart warm. https://youtu.be/5qTpJKLsbic
