didn't realize how much strength I'd lost after 4-5 months of heavy cardio until I returned to the gym last week. cardio and strength training feel like polar opposites.

Key variable though: were the calories at deficit, maintenance, or surplus?

does that matter for strength? lost around 2kg bodyweight during that period so was in a deficit for atleast some of that time

yeah 100% strength is not just neural adaptation, it's that plus muscle. you losing some muscle is part of the loss in strength besides that, just taking off from lifting (not necessarily that you're doing cardio) is responsible for the loss if you did both, at a reasonable ratio, that wouldn't have happened
