Good question. China isn't at the public forefront of large language model development, yet tons of research is being done at Tencent and Alibaba with state-of-the-art publications. DeepSeek is probably equivalent to GPT-3.5. I wonder how far ahead they are in terms of supply-chain management and process automation.

Given the datapoints re: chatbots, privacy and security, I find the divergence from global averages interesting due to the nature of GFW, data surveillance and harvesting. It's in contrast to what I would have expected especially given regulations around encryption and Chinese cryptography standards.

To me it’s not surprising China is not at the forefront of LLMs. A ton of people, but there’s a lot less digital assets they have (maybe other than content) than in the US
