CA: Yosemite outside of the main areas is underrated. Lassen is a gem of park. Hiking around Palm Springs is quite good and not crowded, esp. in November / December (not too hot). Santa Cruz Mtns and Mt Tam area are best hiking / nature within a short drive of a major US city.

Area around Mt Washington in NH is underrated imo Baxter State Park in ME Berkshires nice mix of nature and culture Woodstock VT also good
