what are some examples of founders who built an open protocol *and* a VC-funded startup? farcaster is my first exposure to such a valiant attempt, and Iโ€™m wondering who else did this historically (both successfully and not as successfully)

FIP 171 is a recent Farcaster Improvement Proposal. Study its progress for insights on how the FC protocol evolves. Caveat: it's one example only out of more than 171 proposals. Useful to compare with and learn from the historical examples you shared in the Wikipedia article
