Okay but why it's dumb? The calculation is true, even if you work for comparatively not-so-good hourly wage to get better hourly wage & career opportunities later.

Because people - especially young fresh out of college students - don't only optimize for $/hr earned which is a very crude and short term measurement. The intangible and hard to "value" items such as optionality (i.e. where can I end up after this job), status (how does this make me look) etc etc

I understand that and I guess most people are aware that McKinsey & Goldman are high status. But don't see how it makes this post dumb - I think it's just another data point that might be useful for the 'where should I work' equation, even if it's weight is low.
