i am happier on days i am too busy to remember that democracy is being actively toppled. why can’t i make the mistake of assuming i still have time? everybody else does.

Unlike individual decision-making, I don’t think collective decision-making is an area where it is realistic to expect people learning from the mistakes of others. For that would require a very large majority of the electorate to possess the historical understanding and inference capability that exist in only a very small minority. I’m resigned to the idea that we *must* hit rock bottom, learn hard lessons, and avoid repeating those mistakes for 2–3 generations until that knowledge dissipates and the cycle begins anew. In fact, the quicker we get there, the sooner we rebound, so there’s perhaps an argument for unbridled accelerationism here. The bane of humanity in this century is that we’re reaching a point in our collective timeline where our decisions are starting to impact the far future (climate change, energy, geopolitics, etc), but our short lifespans still bind us to parochial temporalism (cf. the Strausse-Howe generational theory).
