As a reader, I feel like it's a better reading experience now, but curious to hear other perspectives!

Yes, totally understand. We may bring back more customization over time, we'd just want to try to balance it with maintaining a nice reading experience.

as a writer - it used to look more like a "blog" due to extensive  customizations, but i can see how the new UI streamlines the reading experience
