From personal experience, exactly true because "academic and educated" tends to mean "we are smarter than you (about everything)"

We live in a different bubble then. The smartest, most educated people I know tend to be very open to have their ideas challenged, but have thought about a lot of aspects beforehand. 

But maybe you are meeting the online fanatics, while I have a well curated circle of friends that distorts my perception.
