How do you foster a culture of high standards on your team? Esp curious about small remote teams of equals (eg cofounder-like relationship, not employee/manager)

I worked with a lot of charities and I think they really master this concept well. It's all about autonomy and being agile. Make the employees feel responsible. Give them responsibility and coach them to oversuceed on what they do within reason, and budget, and standards.
